Kocatepe Moschee in the Siemensstadt district of Berlin takes its name from the famous Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara, one of Turkey's largest and most architecturally significant modern mosques. The original Kocatepe Mosque, completed in 1987 in the Turkish capital, features classical Ottoman architectural elements on a massive scale, with four towering minarets, a central dome, and interior decoration incorporating traditional Ottoman Islamic art. Its name derives from Kocatepe, a hill in Ankara where the original mosque was built. Naming a Berlin mosque after this important structure connects the congregation to the Turkish Muslim architectural heritage and to the symbolic significance of Ankara as the capital of the modern Republic of Turkey. Siemensstadt, originally developed as a company town for the Siemens electrical equipment manufacturer in the early twentieth century, has become home to significant Turkish and other Muslim immigrant communities. The mosque serves this community with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and a calendar of Islamic observances and educational programs. Like most Turkish mosques in Germany, Kocatepe Moschee Berlin typically operates under the DITIB umbrella or similar Turkish Islamic organizational framework, with imams trained in Turkey sent to lead services according to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence. The mosque's architecture, while typically more modest than its Ankara namesake, may incorporate Ottoman-style design elements including a dome and minaret shape, tile work, calligraphy, and traditional carpet design. Services are conducted in Turkish with Quran recitation in Arabic. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds each evening and mukabele programs completing the Quran over the thirty nights. Iftar meals feature traditional Turkish dishes, and Kadir Gecesi on the twenty-seventh night draws particularly large gatherings for extended night prayers. Mevlid Kandili commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, with special ceremonies including readings of the Mevlid poem composed by Süleyman Çelebi in the fifteenth century. Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı bring large congregations for holiday prayers and community celebrations, with the latter including Qurbani sacrifices for families performing this ritual.
