Sultan Iskandar Mosque stands as one of the most recognisable religious landmarks of Skudai and the broader Johor Bahru district, named after Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail, the twenty fourth Sultan of Johor who served with distinction as the eighth Yang di Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. The mosque honours his memory and his devotion to the Islamic faith which he upheld as a cornerstone of Johor identity throughout his reign. Architecturally the mosque is magnificent, featuring a central dome crowned with a golden finial, graceful minarets rising into the tropical sky, arched colonnades, and expansive courtyards paved in cool stone. The main prayer hall is vast and dignified, supported by carved columns, illuminated by crystal chandeliers, and decorated with Arabic calligraphy drawn from the Qur'an and the names of Allah inscribed around the qibla wall. The mihrab is ornate and the mimbar beside it is finely crafted, from which the khatib delivers the Friday sermon to thousands of worshippers. Ablution halls are generous and well maintained, able to accommodate the large crowds that attend on Fridays and during Ramadan. Beyond its role as a house of prayer the mosque functions as an important centre of Islamic learning and community life in southern Johor, hosting Qur'an recitation classes, tajwid lessons, fiqh lectures, youth programmes, and welfare activities. During major Islamic occasions such as Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, the open grounds overflow with worshippers dressed in their finest baju melayu and kebaya greeting one another with embraces after the festive prayer. Ramadan brings a particularly devoted atmosphere, with tarawih prayers led by distinguished huffaz reciters, community iftar meals feeding hundreds of worshippers, and itikaf observed during the final ten nights. Sultan Iskandar Mosque stands as both a tribute to the late sultan and a living beating heart of Muslim life in Skudai. Royal patronage of mosques in Johor has been central to the state's Islamic identity since the founding of the Johor sultanate in the sixteenth century following the fall of Malacca, and Sultan Iskandar Mosque extends this tradition into the modern era, welcoming state officials, diplomatic visitors, and ordinary citizens into the same hall where all stand equal before Allah in the saf, with the sultan himself occasionally attending Friday prayers to reaffirm the enduring bond between the Johor throne and the Islamic faith that anchors its legitimacy.
