About

Surau Al Ehsan takes its name from a central Islamic concept, ihsan, the station of excellence in worship defined by the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam in the famous hadith of Jibreel as worshipping Allah as though you see Him, and knowing that though you do not see Him He sees you. The surau, situated in Skudai in Johor Bahru's western suburbs, draws its congregation from the surrounding residential tamans and invites them to strive for that highest level of consciousness in their daily prayers and conduct. The structure is modest, a single storey Malaysian style prayer hall with a pitched tiled roof, open louvred windows for ventilation, concrete floor overlaid with prayer carpets, and a small courtyard paved with interlocking bricks. A mihrab of smooth plaster indicates the direction toward Makkah, and a sound system carries the adhan of the appointed muadhin to the nearby streets five times each day. Ablution facilities are located at the side of the building with benches, taps, and drainage designed for tropical conditions. Despite its modest scale, Surau Al Ehsan plays an important role in the daily religious life of its neighbourhood, offering a close convenient place of prayer where neighbours greet one another warmly and where the congregation remains small enough to foster genuine brotherhood. Weekly halaqa circles after Maghrib discuss matters of tafsir, fiqh, and akhlaq, while children gather in the afternoons for Qur'an recitation lessons led by a local ustadz. During Ramadan the surau extends its programming considerably, hosting tarawih prayers led by visiting huffaz, providing simple iftar meals assembled by volunteering aunties from dates, bubur lambuk, and fried kuih, and welcoming families for reflection and remembrance. The surau stands as a humble but faithful point of devotion in the broader tapestry of Skudai's Muslim community. The weekly halaqa circle after Maghrib has become a highlight of the surau's calendar, drawing a devoted group of brothers who bring tea and kuih to share while discussing classical tafsir works, hadith explanations, and the seerah of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, with the ustadz emphasising that the pursuit of ihsan invoked by the surau's name requires not only sincere worship but also the patient acquisition of sacred knowledge that makes true sincerity possible.
