Surau النور Taman Kemas

Surau An-Nur Taman Kemas is located in Taman Kemas, a residential area of Skudai in Johor, Malaysia. The surau's name combines An-Nur — "the Light," one of the beautiful names of Allah and the title of a sura of the Qur'an — with the name of the taman it serves. Naming suraus after An-Nur is common across Malaysia, reflecting the centrality of light imagery in Islamic spirituality, and each surau bearing the name adds its own local texture to the collective landscape of Malaysian Muslim worship. The surau serves its kariah in Taman Kemas with daily prayers, weekend religious education for children, women's programming, and seasonal religious activity. The building is modest in scale, typical of residential suraus — a single prayer hall with carpet in saf lines, a simple mihrab, a small women's section, wudu facilities at the side, and a covered verandah. The kariah is made up of the families living in the taman, a mix of long-settled households and newer residents drawn by Skudai's continuing development. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the community to the five salawat, and the Friday jumu'ah is held at a nearby larger mosque. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, with volunteer teachers from within the community. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the community's spiritual rhythm. Ramadan transforms the surau into a centre of nightly community activity, with taraweeh filling the hall, iftar organised on a family rota, tausiyah sessions between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular spiritual focus of the last ten nights. Eid prayers draw the families of the community in new clothes, with the takbir ringing from the loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that the one who removes a difficulty from a believer, Allah will remove a difficulty from him on the Day of Judgement. The volunteers who maintain Surau An-Nur Taman Kemas, who clean its carpet, who teach its children, who prepare its iftar meals, quietly remove small difficulties from the lives of their neighbours every day and trust in the reciprocal mercy of Allah that the Prophet's promise extends to them.
