College Central Mosque in Somolu, a residential and light industrial area of mainland Lagos, serves the Muslim community associated with a local college or educational institution as well as the surrounding neighbourhood residents who gather for the five daily prayers and Friday Jumuah. Mosques attached to or serving educational institutions have a long tradition in Nigerian Muslim life, reflecting the inseparability of worship and learning that has characterised Islamic tradition from the earliest generations. In Lagos, mosques frequently serve both the immediate academic community of students, teachers, and administrators as well as the broader neighbourhood, functioning as hybrid institutions that integrate religious practice with educational mission. Somolu, along with adjacent Bariga, is home to a substantial Muslim population drawn from Yoruba indigenous Muslims and migrants from northern Nigeria, with the College Central Mosque serving as a focal point for daily devotion and communal gathering. The prayer hall is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, with a clearly marked mihrab, a wooden mimbar for the Friday khutbah, a separate women's section, and ablution facilities. Programmes offered include the five daily prayers with adhan called by the mosque muadhin, Friday Jumuah, Qur'an recitation classes taught by qualified ustadz in the Yoruba and Arabic languages, tajwid training, tafsir lessons, Maliki fiqh study, Islamic education for children, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites and janazah prayers, zakat collection and distribution, and welfare services for needy families. Ramadan sees the mosque filled each evening with worshippers for tarawih prayers, the courtyard or hall arranged for communal iftars featuring Nigerian dishes like jollof rice, moi moi, and akara alongside dates and kunu drinks, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights as worshippers seek Laylatul Qadr. Eid prayers draw students, staff, and neighbourhood residents together in joyful celebration. The College Central Mosque takes special pride in its work with students preparing for the Qur'an memorisation competitions that are a popular feature of Nigerian Muslim educational life, with outstanding young huffaz from the mosque community having won prizes at regional and national levels, bringing honour to the mosque and inspiring younger children to pursue their own hifz goals under the patient guidance of the mosque's teachers.
