Masjid Habib in the Tanjung Tokong area of Penang is a small but distinct mosque serving the northern coastal community of the island with Friday prayers and daily five-time prayers. The Habib name in the mosque's title typically indicates an association with the Hadrami Arab community — traders and scholars from the Hadhramaut region of southern Yemen whose commercial and religious networks tied together Muslim port cities across the Indian Ocean for centuries. The Habib families who settled in Penang arrived primarily in the nineteenth century and played a significant role in the religious and commercial life of the Straits Settlements, often establishing mosques, religious schools, and trading houses that served as anchors for the broader Muslim community. The mosque itself is modest in scale — a main prayer hall, a minaret, a central dome in the Malay-Islamic tradition, and an adjacent space for community gatherings and Qur'an classes. The congregation is mixed, drawing from the surrounding Tanjung Tokong neighbourhood: Malay families long settled in the area, families of Hadrami-Arab descent whose ancestors arrived with the trading networks of earlier centuries, and the newer middle-class Malaysian Muslims drawn to the coast by the residential developments of recent decades. Friday prayers fill the hall, with the khutbah delivered in Malay and occasional Arabic. During Ramadan the mosque runs nightly Taraweeh, organises community iftars that often feature traditional dishes reflecting the layered origins of the congregation (including Yemeni coffee and certain Hadhrami sweet dishes), and coordinates with the Penang Islamic Religious Council on community welfare programmes. Eid prayers draw the full local community. For a visitor interested in the Hadrami-Arab contribution to Southeast Asian Islam — a rich and underappreciated thread running through the region's religious history — the mosque is a small but meaningful reminder that Islam in this part of the world was carried across oceans by merchants and scholars whose names are preserved in the institutions they founded.
