مسجد السلطان عبد Halim Muadzam Shah

Graced by the noble name of Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, the late beloved ruler of Kedah and twice Yang di Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, this masjid in Tasek Glugor of the Penang mainland district of Seberang Perai serves a rural community of farmers, fishermen, and the families who work the paddy fields and rubber estates of the northern peninsula. Penang itself, whose name derives from the pinang areca nut palm, was once a major sultanate trading port and later a British Straits Settlement, and today comprises the island city of George Town together with the mainland districts of Seberang Perai that stretch from Butterworth northward toward the Kedah border.

Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, born in 1927 and reigning as the twenty seventh Sultan of Kedah from 1958 until his passing in 2017, was twice elected as the Yang di Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, serving first from 1970 to 1975 and again from 2011 to 2016, the only Malaysian king to have held the federal office twice. His long reign was marked by gentleness, dignity, and a deep personal devotion to the faith that earned him wide affection across Malaysia.
