Perched above an ancient courtyard in the venerable Algerian city of Tlemcen, Mosque Lalla Gheriba carries a name dear to the women of the western Maghreb, meaning Lady the Stranger or Lady the Traveller, a title of endearment given to a saintly woman whose memory the community has honoured through centuries. Tlemcen itself is one of the great medieval capitals of the Muslim West, rising to prominence under the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties before flourishing as the seat of the Zayyanid kingdom in the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries. Medieval travellers such as Ibn Battuta, Leo Africanus, and al Abdari praised the city as the Granada of North Africa, with its madrasas, libraries, gardens, and countless mosques.

Architecturally the mosque reflects the classic Tlemcen style developed under the Zayyanid kings and refined by later Andalusian refugees who fled to the Maghreb after the fall of Granada in 1492. Horseshoe arches, a rectangular prayer hall supported by thick columns, a carved wooden mihrab facing Makkah, a small square minaret, and a quiet courtyard with an ablution fountain at its centre all speak of centuries of accumulated craft and devotion. Inside, the floor is covered with woven palm mats and red carpets, and calligraphic inscriptions in the Maghribi script decorate the walls around the qiblah.
