About

Eyüp Sultan Moskee in Vlaardingen commemorates Abu Ayyub al Ansari radiallahu anhu, the beloved companion of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam in whose home the Messenger stayed upon his blessed arrival in Madinah during the hijrah, as the people of Yathrib competed to host him. Abu Ayyub, known in the Turkish tradition as Eyüp Sultan, accompanied the Muslim armies in their early campaigns into the Byzantine empire and died during the siege of Constantinople where he was buried at the foot of the city walls, and where centuries later Sultan Mehmed II, after conquering Constantinople in 1453, built a magnificent mosque and tomb over his resting place. That Eyüp Sultan Mosque in Istanbul remains among the most visited pilgrimage sites in Turkey, and mosques across the Turkish diaspora bear the saint's name in his honour. The Vlaardingen mosque serves the Turkish Dutch community of this Rotterdam region municipality with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Turkish language schooling for children, Dutch language support, marriage and funeral rites, and welfare services. The prayer hall inside the adapted building is carpeted, oriented toward the qibla, and decorated in classical Ottoman style with calligraphy naming Allah, Muhammad, and the rightly guided caliphs, with a mihrab, mimbar, and separate women's section. Ramadan at Eyüp Sultan Moskee brings nightly tarawih prayers, iftars featuring Turkish culinary specialties like çorba, pide, and baklava, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten blessed nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in the traditional Turkish manner with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitation, and Kandil nights marking key dates in the Islamic calendar are observed with special prayers and reflection. Eyüp Sultan Moskee's library contains a dedicated section on the history of the sahabah, the companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, with particular emphasis on Abu Ayyub al Ansari whose name the mosque bears, allowing worshippers to deepen their knowledge of the lives and virtues of these foundational figures of the Muslim ummah and to draw practical lessons for their own conduct from their exemplary stories.
