کے بارے میں

Commemorating Martyr Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz, may God have mercy on him, this Turkish mosque in the Yakapinar district of Adana honours a public prosecutor whose tragic death during a 2015 hostage incident shocked the nation and prompted widespread mourning. Kiraz had been investigating the death of a young man during protests, and he was killed while held hostage by armed assailants who stormed his office at an Istanbul courthouse. The tragedy spurred communities across Türkiye to name mosques, streets, and public buildings in his honour. Adana province occupies the fertile Cukurova plain in southern Türkiye, a historic agricultural heartland producing cotton, citrus, and cereals that has sustained human settlement since ancient times. The city of Adana itself traces its origins back thousands of years and preserves Roman bridges, Ottoman mosques, and modern Turkish republic era boulevards alongside its bustling contemporary commerce. Turkish mosque architecture in the modern period draws heavily on the Ottoman classical tradition established by the great architect Sinan during the sixteenth century, with cascading domes, slender pencil point minarets, and prayer halls featuring tile decoration, carved marble and wood, and calligraphic inscriptions. This Kiraz mosque likely employs such Ottoman inspired forms, presenting a dignified and recognisably Turkish face to its Adana neighbourhood. Inside, carpeted prayer hall floors, a mihrab faced with Kütahya tile, and a wooden minbar carved with geometric and floral motifs anchor weekly worship. Five daily prayers gather a steady core of worshippers from surrounding streets, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with men of all ages. Sermons in Turkish incorporate Qur'anic passages recited in Arabic followed by reflection accessible to the congregation, often touching on themes of justice, duty, and the dignity of public service. Ramadan transforms the community with communal iftar featuring Adana dishes of kebab, lahmacun, gozleme, baklava, and sweet künefe, alongside taraweeh prayers. Qur'an courses for children and adults run throughout the year. Women worship in dedicated upper galleries. Eid prayers fill streets. Nearby attractions include the historic Stone Bridge Taşköprü over the Seyhan river, the Adana Ethnography Museum, the Sabanci Merkez Mosque with its massive domes, and the Cukurova agricultural landscapes.
