About
Hasan Akboğa Camii takes its name from Hasan Akboğa, a local benefactor of the Çankaya neighbourhood in central Ankara whose family funded the construction of the mosque and whose memory is preserved in the name placed above its entrance — a very common and deeply meaningful feature of Turkish Muslim life, in which the faithful are reminded each time they enter a mosque that it was built through the hands and wealth of ordinary people moved to act out of piety. The mosque is a well-proportioned neighbourhood structure with a single slim minaret, a central dome, and a forecourt paved in stone and planted with ornamental trees. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in warm tones and lit by tall windows on the qibla wall. The mihrab is carefully finished with Kütahya tile, and the walls carry calligraphic panels of divine names and Qur'anic verses. The imam is appointed by the Diyanet and his Friday sermons are known for a warm, clear style and an engagement with the practical concerns of Çankaya's mixed population of professionals, academics, and long-term residents. Women pray in a comfortable upper gallery, and Qur'an classes for children run throughout the year. Ablution facilities are clean and heated in winter, and the forecourt is a favourite gathering point for elderly men in the long afternoons of summer. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars organised by local families. The imam makes a particular point of memorising the names of new worshippers and of welcoming them personally after their first few Friday attendances, a small habit of pastoral care that has helped Hasan Akboğa Camii to develop, over the years, a reputation among the various religious communities of Çankaya as a place that pays thoughtful attention to the welfare of every individual who walks through its doors. For Muslim visitors to Çankaya, Hasan Akboğa Camii is an unfailingly welcoming place to pray, and the name above its entrance is itself a gentle invitation to consider the countless private benefactions, seen and unseen, through which the Muslim life of Turkey continues to be sustained generation after generation.
