About
Masjid Jamek Bagan Ajam sits in the coastal district of Permatang Kuching on the Malaysian mainland across from Penang Island, a jamek mosque meaning it is one of those authorised for the Friday prayer. The building rises a little above the surrounding homes, its green-tiled roof visible from the main road, and its courtyard offers shade under frangipani trees that locals planted decades ago. The congregation is drawn from the fishing families, factory workers, and small traders of the area, most of Malay heritage with a handful of Indian Muslim neighbours who have lived alongside them for generations. The jumu'ah prayer each week brings the community together in a way weekdays cannot, and the khutbah is delivered in Bahasa Melayu with verses of the Qur'an recited in Arabic before the translation. The imam is a familiar figure in the neighbourhood — he is the one called when a baby is born and the tahnik is performed, when a janazah must be washed and prepared, when a couple wishes to solemnise their nikah. Beyond the five daily prayers, the mosque runs a kelas mengaji for young children, a tahfiz programme for those who wish to memorise the Qur'an, and monthly ceramah by visiting ulama. During Ramadan the committee organises iftar meals funded by sedekah from local businesses, and the hall is filled every night for taraweeh. Eid mornings see rows of men in baju melayu walking down the lane toward the mosque for the special prayer, followed by the customary visits to relatives that fill the rest of the day. The saying of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم that the most beloved parts of the earth to Allah are its mosques is a lived reality here, where the masjid is not just a building but the centre of the lives it serves. Travellers making the coastal drive through Penang are welcome to stop, pray, and continue on, knowing a door was open when they needed it. Across the yard on festival mornings, children race one another in new baju kurung and baju melayu, and the old banyan tree at the boundary wall leans slightly further each year beneath the affectionate weight of generations.
