Surau Taman Sentral

Surau Taman Sentral stands in the quiet residential area of Permatang Kuching on the mainland of Penang state in Malaysia, purpose-built to answer the daily spiritual needs of the families who call Taman Sentral home. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that whoever prays Subuh in congregation, it is as though he prayed the whole night, and the men who gather here before dawn quietly live that hadith. For the people of Taman Sentral, Surau Taman Sentral is not a landmark — it is the living room of the entire neighbourhood. Residents laugh that nobody ever has to announce a funeral in the taman because the moment the lights of the surau come on at an unusual hour, the whole street already knows and begins preparing food for the bereaved family.
