Drawing visitors from the nearby historic quarters of Tlemcen, Algeria's western city celebrated across the medieval Maghreb for its Zayyanid palaces, madrasas, and gardens, the Nouvelle Mosquée d'Agadir, known in Arabic as Masjid Agadir al Jadid and in Tamazight as Tamzgida Tamaynut n Agadir, takes its name from the old Berber quarter of Agadir, meaning fortified granary, which once stood on the citadel hill above the old town. Tlemcen has long been a cradle of learning, its medrese attended by scholars who went on to teach at Fez, Cairo, and Baghdad, and its mosques include the venerable Great Mosque of Tlemcen founded in the twelfth century under the Almoravids, and the shrine of Sidi Boumediene in the eastern quarter. The new mosque of Agadir, distinguished by the word Tamaynut in Tamazight meaning the new, was built to serve the expanded population of the historic Agadir quarter and bears the language inscriptions of both Arabic and Tifinagh in recognition of the town's bilingual heritage. Architecturally the mosque follows the distinctive Tlemceni Andalusi style, with horseshoe arches, carved plaster panels, a square minaret of dressed stone inspired by the Kutubiyya of Marrakech, a central courtyard with a marble fountain for wudu, and a prayer hall adorned with zellij tilework in green, blue, and ochre. Inside, the mihrab is decorated with carved calligraphy bearing verses from Surah al Fatihah, and a cedar minbar polished by long use stands beside it. Daily prayers gather neighbourhood residents, and Jumu'ah draws a larger congregation, with khutbahs delivered in Arabic and occasional greetings in Tamazight. Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, communal iftars featuring harira, chebakia, and dates, and Qur'an completion ceremonies. Eid prayers open onto the surrounding lanes, where children receive sweets. Visitors interested in Tlemceni Andalusi heritage are warmly received, provided modest dress and respectful conduct are observed on entry. An annual mawlid gathering celebrates the memory of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, with readings of Burdah and recitations of salawat, and the mosque's library preserves a small collection of Tlemceni musical manuscripts in the classical gharnati tradition, an echo of the long artistic heritage shared between this Algerian city and the Andalusi centres of learning across the sea.
